About St. John Ambulance
St. John Ambulance is an international humanitarian organization and is a foundation of the Order of St. John. As Canada’s standard for excellence in first aid and CPR services, St. John Ambulance has been delivering lifesaving first aid and CPR training since 1883. St. John certified students and volunteers have helped save thousands of lives in workplaces, homes, and communities across Canada.
Research shows that when an emergency occurs, seconds can mean the difference between life and death. First aid training can prepare us to help during those critical moments. Unfortunately, many Canadians don’t know basic first aid.
St. John Ambulance – Alberta Council (SJA – Alberta) believes that everyone – parents, students, coaches, good Samaritans – should learn the skills needed to be ready to respond in an emergency. They decided to bring their lifesaving training online to remove barriers such as time, geography, and cost to learning first aid theory and practice.
When SJA – Alberta chose Yardstick Training as their eLearning parter, we knew how important it was that learners were confident. Confident in their skills and confident that they could draw on their new skills in an emergency situation.
Our technology, RapidLMS and Credential Manager, ensures that certifications are secure and trackable. For the courses themselves, we used best practices in instructional design to build an experience that was memorable and competency-based. Illustrations break down important background material in detail. Videos and simulations set the scene for what it’s like to actually experience an emergency, then model the steps to take when delivering a first aid procedure, such as resuscitation. Built-in assessments test learners’ knowledge at every stage, from informal Knowledge Checks at key points, to formal quizzes at the end of each module.
Yardstick also built a custom training website for St. John Ambulance to display their online course catalogue, as well as to sell first aid kits.
After over a year of development, we launched awareness and certification tracks for SJA’s most popular offerings. The awareness level courses are offered at a fraction of the cost of in-person courses ($25 CAD) and can be taken by anyone, at any time. Although learners won’t receive a workplace certification at the end of the courses, they are a great introduction to first aid theory, or can help people who hold a certification refresh their skills before they need to get recertified.
The certification track, approved by Alberta Occupational Health and Safety in February 2019, is a blended model. Learners complete the theory component online, then book a one-day in-class assessment to complete the certification process. For anyone who needs formal certification, the blended learning courses can save a full day of in-class time.
Together, these tracks have made it easier for individuals across Alberta to learn how save lives. St. John Ambulance is excited to continue expanding their library of online courses, and Yardstick can’t wait to help!
